Things To Do In Ohio: MAPS Air Museum (North Canton, Ohio)
Bill Duffield

If you are into military aviation history and looking for a thing to do around Canton, Ohio then you must check out MAPS Air Museum. MAPS stands for Military Aviation Preservation Society. This is a very large museum located on the west side of the Akron-Canton Regional Airport in North Canton, Ohio. This internationally known aviation museum has a very large collection of military aircraft and artifacts from different eras. It first opened to the public in 1994, and now has between 50-60 aircraft on display inside the hangar and outside on the tarmac. Eras include World War 1, World War II, and Post War Era: Korea. Aircraft on display include the P-51 Mustang, Lockheed C-130H “Hercules”, and F-14 Tomcat.
What can you expect at MAPS Air Museum?
There are three parts to this museum: inside the hanger on the ground floor, outside on the tarmac, and the second floor of the hanger. The hangar's ground floor includes some aircraft, exhibits and artifacts. The tarmac features most of the aircraft including helicopters, fighter jets, and other types of aircraft. The second floor of the museum features the Ohio Military Museum, Louise Timken Library and Research Center, and Gallery of Heroes exhibit that is included with your ticket as well as an overlook of the museum. Definitely plan on spending at least 2 hours or more here because there is a lot to take in. Each aircraft has a description and some have a QR code to a YouTube video about it which is very helpful. Some of the aircraft you can get up close or go inside.
Bill’s Highlight
The highlight for me was the C-130 Hercules. This is a massive military transport aircraft, and one of the planes that you can go inside. This plane is one of the first you will see when you go outside. It’s located on the right side. You don’t realize how big it is inside until you see it for yourself.
Best Time To Go
Spring and Fall are probably the best times to visit this museum. I went in July during some of the hottest days of the summer and don’t recommend it. On the flipside it was not very busy during this time. The museum does have different events throughout the year so make sure to check out their website’s event page before you visit.
How much does MAPS Air Museum Cost?
This museum is affordable. Standard tickets for adults are $15. There are special discounts as well. Tickets for First Responders, Veterans & Seniors (60 and over) are $13, Senior Veterans $11, Children ages 6-12 $8, Children under 6 free, and WWII Veterans, Korean War Veterans and Active Duty Military are free. Tickets for the museum can only be purchased onsite.
