The Laurel Highlands is home to many festivals throughout the year. One of my favorites is the Chalk The Block festival in Somerset, Pennsylvania. This is 100 things to do in Pennsylvania, Part five. Chalk The Block is the first and oldest street painting festival in Western Pennsylvania. Held on the streets of Uptown Somerset, this annual local festival features over 20 street artists from the area. These talented artists turn the streets of Uptown Somerset into colorful works of art. This is a fun event to attend and you should definitely add it to your itinerary if you’re visiting in late July. Here are some things you should know about the festival before you attend.

What is the best day to attend Chalk The Block?
Each day is filled with lots to do for all ages. I went on Saturday morning. There was a lot going on when I arrived in the morning. The artists were just getting started. This might be a good day for you to attend if you want to watch the artists in action. There was also an artisan market, youth competition, and kids zone. Sunday might be a better day if you want to see the finished artwork. Each day had live music and food trucks. Next year I'm planning to go on Sunday so I can see all the finished artwork.

There is a lot to do at Chalk The Block. The festival includes a car cruise, 5k race, food trucks, local restaurants, vendors, artisans, live music, and of course, chalk painting. There are also competitions for children and emerging artists. The main thing to do is walk the streets and look at the different artwork. Each year has a different theme. This is something I really enjoyed doing. It was a lot of fun walking around on the second day. I got to watch the artists bring their artwork to life.\
