The Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark is a must-see attraction for history buffs and train enthusiasts. This is 100 things to do in Pennsylvania part one. Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad and first opened in 1854, the Horseshoe Curve is a multi-track u-shaped railroad located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The purpose of this engineering marvel was to make it easier for trains to get around the Allegheny Mountains by reducing the grade that they had to climb.
During World War II, the Pennsylvania Railroad aided the war effort by using its railroads to carry troops and supplies. Because of this, Horseshoe Curve was considered a potential target for sabotage by Germany and put under armed guard.
Today, the Horseshoe Curve is a National Historic Landmark, active railway, and popular tourist attraction.
What To See and Do At Horseshoe Curve
There are two parts to your experience at the Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark:
Visitor Center & Museum: The first part of your visit to the Horseshoe Curve will be the visitor center and museum. The visitor center is where you will pay for admission and also where you can find the gift shop. Across the way is the museum that includes an orientation film, exhibits about the history of the curve, and model train displays.
The Observation Area: The second part is the actual Horseshoe Curve. When you are done with the museum, you can go up the steps or the incline to the observation area to watch the trains. The area is very clean with picnic tables and a locomotive on display. Make sure to check the website for status on the incline. When I went it was down.

I really enjoyed watching the trains come around the curve. There is no set schedule for the trains. If you have the time to wait for a train, wait. Don’t leave until you experience it firsthand. Prepare to be amazed at the sounds and views of the train up close as it comes around the curve. Definitely a cool experience.
Important Information For Your Visit
Hours: Open 9am-4pm Wednesday through Sunday.
Admission: $13 for Adults, $12 for Seniors, $11 for kids ages 4 to 7, free for toddlers, and $12 for students and military. The Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark is owned and operated by the Railroaders Memorial Museum. If you plan on visiting the museum, you can purchase tickets to both attractions.
