If you are a rail fan then you must add the Railroaders Memorial Museum to your itinerary.

The Railroaders Memorial Museum is a history museum about railroading in the Altoona, Pennsylvania region. This area played an important role in the rail industry in Pennsylvania and the country. This is one of the best museums that tells the history of railroading in the area and tells the story of the workers who made it possible. It first opened in 1980 as a way to preserve and share the story of these railroaders who helped shape the city. It moved into its current location at the restored PRR Master Mechanic’s Office Building in 1998.

What To Expect At The Railroaders Memorial Museum

There is a lot of railroad history throughout this three floor museum. It is easy to navigate and walking around will make you feel like you are inside one of these buildings during the time period.

The first floor includes an exhibit about why Altoona and an orientation video. I highly suggest watching the video for a few minutes. It will give you a lot of background information.

Most of the exhibits are located on the second and third floors. As you wander through you’ll find artifacts, records and equipment. A lot of the exhibits are interactive. There are also short videos that share railroaders' stories and lifestyle. There are larger display exhibits that depict what life was like during that time period including a replica pub and newspaper stand.

On the third floor there is a large train display. This display is very detailed and works as an educational component to an exhibit about train communication.

Additional equipment and trains, as well as the memorial wall, can be found in and around the roundhouse complex.
