Things To Do In Pennsylvania: The Coffee Pot (Bedford, Pennsylvania)

If you are driving along the Lincoln Highway in Bedford, Pennsylvania you might notice a very large coffee pot. This roadside giant is known simply as The Coffee Pot. This is one hundred things to do in Pennsylvania part three.

You might not think much of it, but this 18 foot tall landmark is an important part of roadside history in America.

The Coffee Pot was designed by Bert Koontz in 1927 as a way to attract drivers on the newly finished Lincoln Highway to his gas station. In fact, many local businesses were doing this at the time with large objects during the 20th century. This is known as programmatic architecture. Programmatic architecture is a design style where you create large structures from everyday objects. The Coffee Pot is one of the few remaining of this style of architecture in Pennsylvania, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Going to be honest to you. There is not much to it. If you are in a time crunch, or go far out of your way to visit, skip it. However, if you are visiting the area and looking for something free and quick to do, it is worth a five-to-ten minute stop to walk around so you can say you’ve been to it. There are not many of these structures left. The Coffee Pot is free to explore. There is a donation box if you want to donate. The area is very nice and clean with picnic tables. Great place to stop for a picnic after a long drive.
